The main concern of the project is the representation of power in East and East Central Europe after World War II. The title “Imperial Traces” indicates that the project is dealing not only with certain styles in the broadest sense (neo-empire, neoclassicism, ecclecticism) but also with persistent strategies of signification which are characteristic for what might call “late Stalinism”. The point is not immediate historiography of Stalinism, but rather the reconstruction of frames and media dispositives which structured the discourses of that time. From this point of view, the “destalinization” of the second half of the 50s and later “restalinizations” (e.g. under Brežnev) become less radical breaks, and new continuities become visible.
